It is tempting for us to believe that we can control our future by carefully planning our time and diligently building our wealth. But James reminds us that our plans often fail, and our money won’t last. Bank accounts and calendars can never offer us the significance and security we long for. But Jesus can. Instead of arrogantly presuming that we can control the future, we can trust in God, who is in charge of our lives today, tomorrow, and for all of eternity. We can trust that Jesus is coming back, so the future is bright for those who know Him. In the meanwhile, we can be patient and faithful to Him, knowing that our suffering is only temporary and our salvation will last forever. Our plans and our money will fail us, but the grace of God never will.
